Psalm 139:13-16
13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
Have you ever looked at a patchwork quilt and thought, “How on earth does someone bring together all these pieces, stitch them up and make it all work as a complete quilt?” It’s one of my favourite things to reflect on, as it always brings me to Psalm 139, where God describes us as fearfully and wonderfully made. We were skilfully and intricately knit together in our mother’s womb. But notice the words in verse 14 before it says all this - I will give thanks and praise Thee.
We all have our individual needs, whether it is from birth or through life choices we’ve made along the way that have impacted our health in various ways. Yet, before we were born, God had chosen us before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4-6). God meets us where we are, in the sense that when we are ready to accept Him as Saviour, He can transform our lives and they can be used for His glory.
That’s why pieces that are sewn together are stitched so finely and intricately, but also to bring various parts together - from our own selves who are broken before we come to Christ, and as a body of Christ, because we can all serve God in the way He intended us to which aren’t going to be all the same ways. We are but earthen vessels that carry the Light (2 Corinthians 4:7) and God will use each one of us for our good and for His glory.
Remember, dear friend, you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Skilfully put together, perfectly by God and perfectly to carry out His will for your good, and His glory.
