Deuteronomy 31:8 - It is the Lord who goes before you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or abandon you. Do not fear or be dismayed.
Did you know that elephants have the largest brains amongst all of the land animals? They are very well known for their excellent memory, which the saying ““Elephants never forget” comes from. I first learnt about this during lockdown when I met a young mother and her baby. They had a heartbreaking story, one only God could bring someone through, and during my time spent with them, the little baby had an elephant in memory of a loved one. That’s when I heard the saying “elephants never forget”.
As children of God, we can hold on to a great promise that our Heavenly Father never forgets us. He has said that He will always be with you, ever present (Psalm 46:1-2). Throughout every up and down in your life. He has said that He will never fail you or abandon you, He will never cease to let you go as His child. His presence will go before you and He promises to give you rest (Exodus 33:14). We may have seasons that we feel God is distant, that should only draw us closer to Him, to long for His presence more deeply.
Lastly, He says that we are not to be afraid, disheartened, troubled (Deuteronomy 31:6), because He is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9) - the Holy Spirit dwells in you, and will always be there (Romans 8:9-11).
The song by the Getty’s, Matt Bowsell and Matt Papa describes the Israelites going towards the promised land. When they doubted Moses’ decision to help them and take them on this journey, God reminded them time and time again that He will go before them. Let this refresh your soul - our God will go before us!
Our God will go before us
And guide us by His presence
What confidence this promise is
We will never walk alone
Through unknown paths, through shadows
Our hearts fear not tomorrow
For every step, His faithfulness
Is the truth that lights our way
