Dwell: A Four-Week Bible Study

A youth leader at church often shares this quote with us: “Get into the Word, and the Word will get into you”.

Colossians 3:16 speaks about letting and encouraging the Word of God to dwell in us richly and deeply. And it was through this verse that made me wonder about that word ‘dwell’… (and the inspiration behind the Dwell Bible Journalling kit!)

So what does the word 'DWELL' mean?

Looking at what the dictionary's definition says, it means to live or stay as a permanent resident or “to reside”. That means to never leave, ever. To always have a place there. From the Bible’s perspective, there are various verses that take about dwelling - dwelling in the house of the Lord forever (Psalm 23:6); dwelling together in unity (Psalm 133:1); everything belongs to God, including “they that dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1); dwelling in God’s presence for one day is better than a thousand with the wicked and evil in this world (Psalm 84:10); being rooted and grounded in love because Christ dwells inside (Ephesians 3:16-17); and, that the Holy Spirit dwells within us as a child of God (Romans 8:11).

The list could go on, and I encourage you to search for verses that talk about God dwelling in us. In fact, why not spend the next 10-15 minutes looking for verses in the bible and jot them down in your notebook or journal. Underline them in your bible and highlight the word ‘dwell’ (Added bonus: I like to put a date and a brief explanation beside the verse so that when I come across it again, I can see how it blessed me or what the verse meant to me at the time. The journalling kit mentioned at the top also comes with sticky notes, if you prefer not to mark your bible).

Over the next few weeks, I want YOU to meditate on this verse as we study God’s Word. This verse that spoke volumes to me a few months ago, and has changed my study and prayer life…

Read it.

Read it again.

Meditate on it day and night.

Pray it.

Pray over it.

Share it.

Let the word of God dwell in your heart and mind richly and deeply.
